Identity of Chance: The Art of Lotería

The imagery of lotería, or Mexican bingo, seeks to convey a comprehensive message about national identity.  This essay explores the expansive ways in which each drawing on the game board relates to expressions of culture, class and religion. The various images paint a complex picture of what it means to be a Mexicano

Through Black Glass: Obsidian, Maya and Materiality 

Obsidian, for the Maya, was not simply a material of utilitarian purpose. The volcanic glass was imbued with spiritual power, which has served to connect the Maya civilization to its deities for centuries. Through its use in ritual sacrifice, obsidian was a material that opened the gateway to the gods.

Schlitz Brewery Tied–Houses and the Creation of German Immigrant Identity in Chicago 

Schuba’s Tavern in Chicago, a former Schlitz Brewery tied-house, historically stood as a symbol of an aspirational identity for German-American immigrants.  The architectural elements reflect a desire to honor heritage and attain wealth.
