Learning and Public Engagement - Art Institute of Chicago
Gallery Talks
As an adjunct lecturer and fellow, I performed countless gallery talks across the collection at the Art Institute of Chicago. From folk to Islamic, ancient art of the Americas and the Impressionists, there are few cultures or time periods that I have not spoken on.
Each gallery talk would require a week of research in the Ryerson and Burnham Library, review of the museum’s object files, and a meeting with the artwork’s curatorial department.
To craft a compelling narrative about a group of objects I first ask myself, “What is interesting about these works of art to someone with no art background?” This question helps to define a thread of inquiry that can be carried from piece to piece. I also consider the historical context, artist’s personal life, how the work was made, where the artwork fits within the chronology of the art historical period, and any fun facts and stories that I find in my research.
Academic Lectures
The preparation for an academic lecture is similar to that of a gallery talk, but lacks the presence of the objects in question. Without the works of art in a gallery setting, the objects must be described in greater detail. Typically, lectures are short and concise because they precede a live performance.
I have spoken at concerts for the Chicago Symphony, Avalon Strings Quartet, and at corporate events for Google, Bank of America, Merrill Lynch and the Chicago Bulls.
Exhibition Text
During my tenure as a fellow at the Art Institute of Chicago, I wrote interpretive and interactive text for exhibitions. The tone was academic, yet accessible to diverse audiences. The process was a collaboration between education and curatorial departments, to drive engagement and promote critical thinking.
Print Media - Member Magazine
For the Art Institute Member Magazine, I wrote program descriptions and edited content. The publication is produced monthly, and provides members with information regarding upcoming exhibitions, program offerings, and other special events.
